When You're Tired, Find Rest in God

Prayer Text

You finally sit down, but your mind is still at work. There's a message to answer, a bill to think about, or someone who needs you. Even when the room is quiet, it can feel hard to rest. Maybe you've been carrying that feeling all day. God sees the work that leaves you worn out, including the work no one else sees. You can come to Him with all of it. For these next few minutes, let's hear what Jesus says to tired people, then talk to God together.

In Matthew chapter eleven, verses twenty-eight through thirty, Jesus says in the World English Bible: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

A yoke was a wooden frame used to help animals pull a load. Jesus uses that picture as He asks us to learn from Him. He calls Himself gentle. His invitation is for people who are already tired. You can bring Him the job that follows you home, the care you give, or the feeling that you should be doing more. Following Jesus doesn't mean every day will be easy. The rest He offers reaches deeper than the end of a shift. We can turn to Him in the middle of a busy day and ask Him to show us how to live. We can start with an honest prayer.

Dear God, I'm tired. You know what this day has asked of me. You know the things I got done and the things I couldn't get to. I keep going over them in my head. Please meet me here. Help me stop hiding how worn out I feel. I don't need a long speech to talk to You. I can tell You the truth. Some of this is too much for me to carry alone. When I feel that I have to hold everything together, remind me that I can turn to You and ask for help.

Help me see what needs my care today and what can wait. Give me wisdom when I need to say, "I can't do that right now." Help me say it with kindness. I worry about letting people down. I worry that stopping means I'm falling behind. Please help me make room for rest. Some days I feel guilty as soon as I stop. Help me remember that I am loved while I rest, too. When I think of one more task, help me decide if it really needs to be done now. Help me put down the work that can wait. Help me trust You with the parts of this day that are still unfinished.

Show me where I can ask someone to share the load. Help me be clear about what I need. A small bit of help can matter: someone taking a turn, listening for a while, or giving me time to sit. Help me accept that care with thanks. Please look after the people who rely on me, and help us find ways to care for each other. I want to listen with patience and speak with love. When I'm too tired to do that well, help me be honest and make room to rest.

Thank You for small things I can enjoy without having to finish a task first. A song I love. A little fresh air. Time with someone who knows me. Help me notice those gifts. When I sit down, help me be kind to myself if my thoughts are still busy. I can bring them to You again. If sleep is hard tonight, please comfort me. Help me find the care and rest I need. Teach me to see my worth even on the days when I get very little done.

Jesus, You invited tired people to come to You. I'm coming as I am. Help me learn Your gentle way, one day at a time. I don't know what tomorrow will ask of me. For now, please help me be here with You. Thank You for hearing the words I can say and knowing the things I can't put into words. Keep the people I love in Your care. Give us the rest we need and help for what comes next. In Jesus' name, amen.
